Alli Owens Receives Woman in Motorsports Award
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (February 4, 2009) – The Victory Lane Association will honor ARCA RE/MAX Series driver Alli Owens on Sunday, February 8, as the recipient of its Woman in Motorsports award. The award recognizes women who have made significant contributions to the sport of auto racing. Past winners include Louise Smith and Linda Vaughn.
Walter Keller, President of the Victory Lane Association, stated Owens was chosen because her accomplishments serve as an inspiration to young drivers. “We chose to honor Alli because her achievements have already made a great impact on auto racing,” said Keller. “Alli proved that there are no obstacles that can’t be overcome. She secured her own sponsor. She went from driving at local short tracks to competing in the top levels of the sport, and she’s only 20 years old. She is certainly an encouragement to all up-and-coming drivers.
“Our winners of the Woman in Motorsports award are typically much older than Alli,” continued Keller. “It usually takes several years to establish a legacy in this sport, but Alli has already made her mark. One of the Victory Lane Association’s goals is to recognize those who contribute to the growth and development of the sport. Alli followed in the footsteps of several great women and has left the door wide open for other young ladies to pursue motorsports as a career. We’re excited to honor her for that.”
Owens got her start in competitive racing as a factory rider for Huffy in BMX competition. She began racing cars at age 12 and progressed through Quarter Midget, Mini Stock, Late Model and Modified competition before reaching the ARCA RE/MAX Series in 2008. She now drives the No. 19 ElectrifyingCareers.com Toyota fielded by D’Hondt Motorsports.
“I’m honored to be recognized by the Victory Lane Association,” said Owens. “All of the women who have won this award are such great role models. They all helped take our sport to new heights. It’s special to have this in common with them. I hope that I can inspire young drivers in the same way that all of these great women in motorsports motivated me."
Headquartered in Daytona Beach, Fla., the Victory Lane Association was formed to engage in the promotion and enjoyment of all types of auto racing. It holds its awards ceremony annually. Nine awards are handed out in categories that honor drivers, mechanics, engineers and promoters. The association’s board members determine three nominees for each award.
